Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are generally indicated when there are two or more healthy teeth to aid in supporting the restoration. A partial denture, unlike other treatment options is removable. Yet, unlike other options, a partial relies upon healthy teeth to help hold it in place.

Partial dentures are made from hard cast acrylic and may or may not involve a metal frame or metal clips to aid in retention. The treatment plan for a partial is similar to a full denture, except that as a general rule the step of producing and placing a temporary is omitted.

Properly designed and manufactured partials generally have far greater retention than full dentures. This is particularly important with the lower jaw, which relies entirely on gravity to hold a full denture in place. A partial, on the other hand, uses clips which attach to remaining teeth and prevent the restoration from "floating". Consequently, when looking at a large restoration, dentists will usually encourage the patient to consider salvaging any soundly rooted teeth, whether healthy or not, before shifting to a full denture.
